Treatment Planning for Dental Implants
at The Hub Dental Practice
in Milton Keynes

The treatment planning for Implants follows the same general format whether the case is a single Implant or Multiple Implants.

Treatment Planning is the most important part of the treatment. It allows up to investigate any potential complications, it also allows us to understand the patients needs. It is also very common for us to find that the need for Dental Implants is just one of many dental needs that the patient requires.

We will only undertake Dental Implant Treatment where we feel that we can meet the patients expectations and just as importantly, that the patient will be able to maintain good dental Health afterwards.

We strongly suggest that patients research Dental Implants before their appointment, and we offer a few leaflets with some useful information. (see below)

Stages in the implant process?

From Start to finish the dental implant process normally involves several stages that take place over a period of time from three to twelve months. There are various implant methods such as placing implants at the time the tooth root is extracted or even placing the implant and restoring it with a tooth on the same day.

The five stages are:

Assessment and Planning
Implant Placement Procedure
Integration Phase
The Restorative Procedure

Assessment and Planning

We will start off by completing

A full Dental Health History
A full Dental Examination

We will always need x-rays (patients will often have them already)

We will usually take pictures and Study Models

If there are other dental problems then we will give you a separate treatment plan for these as well.

We will then have a discussion about the various options including non implant option and we have a number of leaflets that we give to patients; We will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the treatment options as well as posible complications, so that the patient can make an inform decision.

We will then give you a written treatment plan with costing's and time frames.

We will then encourage the patient to ask as many questions as they need to.

We like patients to feel that they are under no pressure to agree to treatment so we always suggest at this stage that the patient to go away and think about what they want to do. If the patients agrees, we then make another appointment when the discussion continues and a treatment plan is agreed.

The way forward for the Treatment may be to proceed with the treatment, defer the treatment, or continue to think about it.

Implant Placement Procedure

This is generally a simple procedure that is performed under sterile conditions in a dental surgery usualy using local anaesthesia.

We do offer the option of sedation as well.

We may use some of the bone saved from the drilling procedure and some artificial bone and a membrane to augment the proper contour of the ridge and gum around the implant.

Integration Period Phase

Some Dental implants can be loaded into function immediately or quite soon after surgery.

However in most cases a period of three to six months should be allowed for the implant to fully integrate and fuse with the supporting bone.

The patients own denture or in some cases a simple adhesive bridge can be worn during the healing phase.

The Restorative Procedure

Once the Dental Implant has integrated we will connect a healing abutment to connect the implant to the gum.

A couple of weeks later We then take impressions so that the restoration can be constructed

The restoration is constructed by a specialist dental laboratory.

After the restoration is placed, patients will be advised on cleaning thoroughly around the implants.

We will then give the patient a a programme to maintain the integrity of the implant and restoration.
